Rental housing crisis in Iowa prompted by unaffordable rents

A report by the Iowa Coalition for Housing and the Homeless and the National Low Income Housing Coalition says 34 percent of Iowa renters cannot afford a two-bedroom unit at market rates. The housing wage in Iowa is $9.10 an hour, with Cedar Rapids at $9.75, Iowa City at $11.19, Des Moines $10.87, and Pottawattamie County $11.40. Minimum wage workers would need 71 hours weekly in Iowa to afford a two-bedroom, rising to 76 in Cedar Rapids and 87 in Iowa City. The group urges an affordable housing plan as Gov. Vilsack forms a task force.
