Dismantling Mao’s communes moves begin in China
China plans next year to unwind Mao Tse-tung’s utopian 1958 to 1960s rural communes. Deng Xiaoping and Chen Yun oppose the idea but now push toward restoring local governments and reestablishing civil affairs with farmers given choice among agricultural systems within socialist guidelines. The transition aims to reconstruct local government dismantled 23 years ago as the National People’s Congress prepares for an unusual session.
