Saving expectant mothers in Nepal
In Nepal a grass roots group led by 55 year old Astamaya Tami travels to poor mountain villages with vaccines vitamins and advice to cut maternal deaths. Nepal has halved maternal mortality in five years though global targets remain unmet. U N figures show deaths declined 34 percent from 540 000 two decades ago to 358 000 in 2008. Rich countries see 24 per 100 000 live births while Afghanistan reports up to 1400 and Zimbabwe faces rising rates.
