Kiwanians Pledge Last $100 To Camp Good Health Drive

Cedar Rapids Fertilizer Plant To Be Built On Rock Island Yards

Darling and Company of Chicago will buy a 16 acre Rock Island yard parcel in Cedar Rapids for a new fertilizer plant costing a quarter to a half million dollars. The project includes remodeling the old roundhouse, construction of a causeway to Shaver road, and a production facility with up to 150 workers. Plant startup aims within a year, with initial three to four workers in the roundhouse warehouse. Work begins soon under O. F. Paulson Company, with Iowa Electric Light and Power providing dirt for the causeway joint project. Pricing and detailed plans await drawings. fertilizer will be shipped from East St. Louis until Cedar Rapids production begins. The sale followed a 1945 inquiry and a 1952 revival aided by local rep Arthur C. Nelson. a title cloud tied to a Rock Island settlement was resolved prior to closing.

An 18 foot python named Pete escaped from the Forest Park Zoo in Fort Worth Texas police and zoo workers cleared nearby areas while a sound truck warned the public. Pete previously lived in a box near the snake pit and could travel across the Trinity River. Reformatory Escapees Caught Near Anamosa

Two escapees from the local reformatory were recaptured within 24 hours. Leo Teer age 25 from Los Angeles serving five years for larceny was nabbed by Sheriff L M Dreibelbis and Probation Officer Oscar Story in a cornfield about 10 miles northeast of Anamosa. Stephen Penrod age 23 from Quincy serving 10 years for car theft was rounded up by a posse in the same area. Warden Ray Purcell said a chain with a hook helped them climb the north wall and they escaped before guards reported for duty.

Nine Found Dead From Gas Fumes

In Queensferry Wales seven children and their parents were found dead in a gas filled house in a suspected mass murder suicide following a family quarrel. Only 15 year old Sheila survived in critical condition. Police said a gas pipe was sawed and some victims had other injuries. Neighbors said the King family had quarrelled Friday night.

Three Injured in Collision North of Mt. Vernon Iowa

Three injured and a fourth unharmed after a car rear ended a tractor on Highway 261 five miles north of Mt. Vernon. Edward Clark 72 and his grandson Eddie Clark 2, both hospitalized at St. Luke's in Cedar Rapids, along with Paul Ostergaard 58, were treated for injuries. John Clark 30 escaped injury.
