Auto collision near Cedar Rapids leaves two dead
A 12:18 a.m. crash on the highway near Cedar Rapids killed Beltz and Short occupants. Beltz, returning from a Townsend club meeting, drove onto the highway from a side road and collided with Donald Short's Ford roadster traveling 55 to 60 mph. The impact sheared Beltz's body from the chassis and hurled it toward a railroad viaduct, while Short's car was left wrecked near the guard rail. Police and medics rushed to the scene as bystanders reported seeing bodies fly through the air. A university student named Jack Hruska witnessed the crash aftermath and identified the Beltz car as failing to yield at the highway entrance. Beltz was a local contractor, husband, and father of three, with survivors listed. The deaths are under investigation and the bodies were taken to Moon Funeral Home.
