Why Advertising Icons Linger in Our Minds
Ellen Havre Weis of the Museum of Modern Mythology explains how figures like Tony the Tiger and the Quaker Man endure in American culture. She notes television from the 1950s helped these characters become demi god like, living on as consumers perpetuate their existence. Weis will speak to the Advertising Federation of Cedar Rapids at Collins Plaza, noon Thursday, with admission $9 members $13 non members.

Overreaction risk to recession cited by banking official
Alan Tubbs president of Maquoketa State Bank and ABA president elect warns that curbing credit and overregulation could deepen a recession. He notes banks are well capitalized with $210 billion in backing and $60 billion in bad debt reserves while FDIC reserves may fall to $11 billion by year end. Tubbs urges measured action and cautions against panic-driven policy.
