Haitian Leader Ousted in Port-au-Prince Coup
In Port-au-Prince Lt Gen Henri Namphy was ousted in a military coup and escorted to the international airport. Commander Prosper Avril named as new head of state and Dessalines Barracks commander Jean-Claude Paul as army chief. Gunfire at the presidential palace left soldiers dead and witnesses described fighting between factions.
