Teachers Just Beginning to Use Power in Walkouts

Des Moines, AP. NEA president-elect George D. Fischer says teachers are just beginning to use strikes to gain influence. He cites 68 percent of NEA's 1.1 million members in favor of strikes and predicts more work stoppages than the 350 to 400 this school year. He argues teachers seek a voice in curriculum, class size, and school design, not only pay, and notes parental support in some cases. He warns militant attitudes may affect students, and administrators may increasingly negotiate.
