State Liquor Sales Profits Hit New Heights in Iowa

The Iowa Liquor Commission reported its most profitable year ever for the fiscal year ended June 30, with sales at 41.19 million dollars and net profit near 9.94 million. Transfers to the general fund and tax funds exceeded 14 million, with additional allocations to cities counties and agencies. The year also saw a modernization of stores and expansion of suburban outlets while per capita consumption remained among the nation’s lowest.

Iowa Doctors Elect C R Man to Post

More than 70 doctors attended the Iowa Academy of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology meeting in Iowa City. Dr Arthur Downing of Des Moines was named president succeeding Dr C M Kos of the University of Iowa. Dr Chester Woodburn of Des Moines was elected president elect and was succeeded as vice president by Dr Wayne Foster of Cedar Rapids. Dr William Huffman of Iowa City was chosen secretary treasurer succeeding Dr Arthur C Wise.

Sewer Aid Sought by 36 Cities

Iowa health department said Friday the state will receive 896 425 dollars in federal money to aid communities improve or expand sewage treatment plants. Thirty-six communities have applied for aid totaling well over 2 006 000 dollars. The program will pay 30 percent or 250 000 dollars of project cost, whichever is less. Marion Cedar Rapids seeks the maximum grant of 250 000 dollars.

Federal aid program aids 18 of 55 cities

Houser noted that last year the program distributed aid to 18 of 55 cities that applied. He said more cities are expected to apply for the aid, though no application deadline has been set.

Salary hike for Cedar Assessor ruled illegal

An assistant attorney general ruled mid year salary increases for Scott County Assessor C. R. Jones and Cedar County Assessor H. L. Busching illegal. The conference boards had approved boosts of 1000 dollars and 300 dollars, but the 1959 assessor law did not grant such authority for mid year raises.

Des Moines woman jailed for selling driver's license

Georgia Mae Starcevic. 21, of Des Moines, was sentenced to 2 days in the county jail after selling her driver's license to a 16 year old for identification to buy beer. She said she obtained a duplicate license for town use.

SUI Fraternities pledge many eastern Iowans

Iowa City University of Iowa fraternities pledged 263 men after a five day rushing period. East Iowa pledges include Alpha Tau Omega Jared Bauch Gladbrook William Hanna Marion Jack Shallickey Cedar Rapids Bill Long Wilton Junction and multiple members named for Beta Theta Pi Delta Chi Delta Tau Delta Delta Upsilon Phi Delta Theta Phi Kappa Psi and other houses across Cedar Rapids Iowa City Monticello Garwin Tama and surrounding areas.

Patrolman J. L. Smith Praised By Driver For Courtesy

Special to The Gazette Iowa City patrolman J L Smith received praise after arresting R F Cramer of Grundy Center for speeding on highway 6 west of Tiffin. Cramer asked to pay the $7 fine by mail saying he was treated with the greatest courtesy by the officer.

Decorah Council Seeks Bids for Street Extension

Decorah city council asks bids for filling and grading on the extension of Decorah avenue to create a through street. The project runs west past the new city hall site, by Thomas Roberts school, and to court street. Completion target is six weeks with authority given to the project committee and city engineer to negotiate necessary land acquisitions.

Joke results in fines for East Iowans

A May practical joke led to fines for two North English men Glenn Reed and William Popham each fined 100 dollars and placed on six months probation. Pending good behavior 75 dollars of the fine was suspended. They entered Earl Denison's home wearing masks in North English.
