SPRINGFIELD ILL The state pardon and parole board on Wednesday kept Nathan Leopold's parole rehearing request alive for November 14 as they consider his plea.
Coroner Dr. Jay Benton of Williams Mine, MARENGO, resigns effective Tuesday. Iowa County Board of Supervisors accepts the resignation and will not name a successor. Benton plans to return to school to study pediatrics.
Max A. Wood, 51, of rural Mason City, died Wednesday at a hospital from injuries suffered in a two car collision on September 7. Local authorities investigated the crash and identified the vehicles involved and the time of the accident.
A late Tuesday night crash on highway 148 six and a half miles south of Anita, Iowa, left two men dead and one injured. Donald C. Bond, 43, of Bridgewater, was the driver and Hugh D. Armstrong, 38, of Orient, also died. Earl Wiggens of Fontanelle was hospitalized in Greenfield with nonserious injuries. Bond apparently lost control, sending the car off the road and tumbling back onto the highway. The 1957 Iowa motor vehicle death toll rose to 511 on Wednesday.
The American Legion awarded Bishop Fulton J. Sheen of New York its Distinguished Services Medal and honored NBC president Robert W. Sarnoff with its Americanism Award in Atlantic City.
Mrs. E Bolling Byrd mother of Senator Byrd and the late Rear Adm. Richard E Byrd died Tuesday night in Winchester Virginia AP report notes her relation to prominent Byrd family figures and marks the family loss in a regional obituary context
Home Secretary Richard Butler will enter a London hospital Thursday for a hernia operation, announced by the Home Office on Wednesday.
A 19-year-old parolee, Edward Burgess of 225 Twenty Fourth Street SE, was arraigned in district court on larceny charges for stealing from Cedar Rapids Country Club lockers over three summers. He admitted taking billfolds golf clubs and golf balls and was held on a Sept 25 plea date. Burgess previously served time for a food store robbery.
Four service stations along Highway 30 near Cedar Rapids suffered breakins Tuesday night. Glass was broken to reach through windows. cash and small items were stolen. Largest haul was $52.37 from Don Stoddard Sinclair station. other losses included minor cash, stamps, batteries, a flashlight, and pens at Ed Nemec Mobil and Neale Weaver D X stations. Milo Bervid's Texaco showed no losses at report time.
Linn County Treasurer Frank Bates reminds property owners that the second half of property taxes is due by September 30. Beginning October 1 a penalty of three fourths of one percent applies. Office hours are 8 am to 5 pm weekdays and until noon Saturday. Untitled vehicles will not qualify for 1958 registrations as Iowa law requires titles by November 30.
A 36 year old Mt. Vernon man, John A. Lyon, is in the county jail awaiting arraignment in district court after being arrested Tuesday by Patrolman M. F. Jacobs and Deputy Sheriff Harry Ackerman. He is accused of breaking into the Stanley TV and Appliance store in Lisbon on Sept. 10 and possessing a missing television set.
Frantz Construction Company of Iowa City files replevin in Linn District Court against Gateway Transportation of Cedar Rapids seeking possession of a 2900 pound shipment of window sills bought from Inland Steel of Milwaukee. They value the merchandise at 500 dollars and seek possession or judgment for value plus 50 dollars damages.
Gordon V. Wear, 24, of Central City was released on bond after pleading innocent in Linn County district court to a false check charge. Wear is accused of cashing a bad check in a local transaction.
A $5,529 furnace installation suit was dismissed by plaintiff Elsie Wesbrook against Holland Furnace Company. Bohumal Mallie of Lisbon appealed a Sept 5 traffic conviction for failing to signal before turning, fined $10. Family Finance Corporation filed a $353.50 promissory note suit against Emmett and Marian Rasmussen.
Howard W. McLaughlin 41 year old Cedar Rapids attorney filed nomination papers for the city municipal court judgeship, seeking the $8,000 yearly post currently held by Loren Hullinger. A University of Iowa Law School graduate admitted 1942, he served in the Navy, practiced with several firms, opened his own office in 1952, and holds multiple bar and civic memberships. He is married to Lucile Reynolds and has a daughter, Sue, age 15, living at 1064 Thirty-fifth Street NE.
A 16 year old polio victim paralyzed from the waist down telephoned her mother from New York to say she had eloped with her 23 year old boyfriend Eugene Lilac. The couple disappeared after leaving home Sunday to see a movie and reportedly planned to marry in Tonawanda New York at his father's house after postponing until her 17th birthday. The girl's father said he and his wife approved of the son-in-law and expected their daughter to come to no harm.
Storm Lake reports 32 influenza cases in Buena Vista County. Health officer Dr. Thomas E. Shea says it does not resemble Asian flu, with little fever and mild sore throat. Cases scattered in Storm Lake and county. Iowa Health Department notified and referred to WHO regional lab director Dr. Albert McKee.
Linn County board of supervisors accepted an August report from municipal court Clerk Ollie Linville showing $882 in state fines credited to the county school fund. They also received a petition to establish a secondary road assessment district for crushed stone work on 1.6 miles in Marion and Bertram townships from three signers.
Cedar Rapids police held Harold Hill Jr. 17 of 3410 Circle Drive on a charge of stealing 25 dollars from a neighbor. Detective Capt. John Kuba said Hill is accused of entering Carl Heinze's home at 3315 Circle Drive and taking the cash from a bedroom dresser drawer.
Mrs Richard Adams 68 lifelong Solon resident died Tuesday morning at an Iowa City hospital after a lingering illness. Born Lucile Shircliff May 13 1689 she married Richard K Adams in Solon Oct 22 1928. Services 2 p m Friday in Solon Methodist Church burial Oak Hill Cemetery. Friends may call Brosh Funeral Home Solon Wednesday evening and at the family home Thursday noon to Friday noon. Donations to Johnson County Cancer Fund requested.
Antoinette Maude Wood widow of Ralph Wood of 636 Twentieth Avenue SW Cedar Rapids died Wednesday after a long illness. Born April 8, 1876 in Hebron Illinois she leaves a daughter Ruth Kent of Cedar Rapids and a brother Fred Thomas of Long Beach California. She attended Sharon Evangelical United Brethren Church services at Turner chapel 3:30 p.m. Friday by Rev Walter Cerka with burial at Cedar Memorial. Friends may call at the chapel.
Doris Van Dee infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. LaVerne Lester Van Dee of Moore trailer court Marion died Tuesday. Survived by parents a brother William Michael a Marion and grandparents Forest Boone Manchester and Lester Van Dee Cedar Rapids. Private services were held in Turner chapel Wednesday afternoon with cremation committal.

The Iowa State Commerce Commission announced it will seek legislation requiring utilities to be on standby during construction near power lines. The move follows the Sept. 12 death of Cyril Cronk and Daniel Beveridge in Des Moines when a shovel boom touched a 14,000 volt line. The report cites crane operator negligence and notes possible criminal negligence provisions.

In Jerusalem a shell from the 1948 Arab-Israeli war exploded in a field Tuesday killing 14 Arab school children aged 9 to 13 who were crossing toward a village near the Jordanian border. An older boy warned them away but rocks were thrown at the missile triggering the blast. Three others were wounded.

Washington Mathews, 31, of 615 Ninth Avenue SE Cedar Rapids, admitted stealing 300 dollars from the Marion waterworks office while cleaning the building. He also faced accusations of taking a watch from King Korn trading Stamp store, 20 dollars from the bus depot office, and 24 cans of beer from Eddie's pizza house. Eddie Washington, 23, is also being held, accused of taking several articles while working with Mathews.
An AP report from Oslo notes serious anxiety Wednesday for King Haakon of Norway. The 85 year old monarch has been ill since he fell and broke his leg in June 1955.
