Quad-Cities Named on Atomic Target List

The government released for the first time the Official list of 70 critical target areas likely to suffer atomic attack. It names the Quad-Cities Davenport Moline East Moline and nearby Keokuk area as part of the targets, with Des Moines Dubuque Sioux City and Waterloo-Clinton County areas on a secondary list.

Midwest Critical List Expands To Include More Cities

The defense agency released a revised list of 70 critical areas amid the hydrogen bomb scare. It adds Evansville Indiana and Wilkes-Barre Hazleton Pennsylvania while noting many other cities above 51 000 population are noncritical unless industrially important.

Fire Ravages Two Farms Near Urbana

Lightning struck a barn on Delbert Harsisen’s farm seven and a half miles northwest of Urbana destroying a barn double corn crib and 2 garages. Wind spread flames to James Hoffman’s farm where barns machine shed and corn cribs burned and livestock perished. Firefighters from Urbana Walker Brandan Vinton and Howtey battled the blaze with seven trucks until after 7 am.

Cedar Rapids to Join 11-Center Civil Defense Warning Network

Cedar Rapids will be one of 11 centers in a new civil defense warning system aimed at cutting alert time for the entire state from 17 minutes to under five. The plan links Minneapolis regional HQ with Cedar Rapids fire department, using short coded warnings and rapid multi-county phone blasts.
