Whitson Named First Science Officer on Space Station
Peggy Whitson, an Iowa native and longtime space station crew member, was named the outpost's first science officer. NASA Administrator Sean O'Keefe announced the promotion during a Mission Control radio link as construction winds down with 17 months to complete the U.S. portion. Whitson, 42, grew up near Mount Ayr and holds biology and chemistry degrees from Iowa Wesleyan College.
