Nature Center naturalists host a Fall Wildflower Walk Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at Indian Creek Nature Center Cedar Rapids. The casual hike highlights goldenrod asters and wildflowers with poisonous plants noted. entry 50 cents for non members, free for members.
The Linn County Sight Saving Committee kicks off its September campaign under the theme Early Detection for Early Correction. Chairman Mrs. Robert Fletcher announces activities to spread information on blinding diseases and children's eye issues and to fund sight saving programs with free eye safety kits and cataract education.
The University of Puerto Rico Rio Piedras campus suspends classes for 26,000 students after students joined a strike by maintenance and clerical workers. Officials say 25 students were suspended for actions including nailing doors shut and breaking restroom fixtures.
The House approved a 160 million measure to fund ERDA research and development of electric vehicles by a wide margin. It plans government purchase of up to 7,500 demonstration cars as prototypes improve, with the Senate set to act next week. Ford criticized the bill as premature and redundant to private industry efforts.
President Anwar Sadat won a second six year term with 99.939 percent of valid votes, Interior Minister Saryed Fahmi announced after Thursday’s referendum. Fahmi said the result backed Sadat’s Arab-Israeli settlement push and domestic development plans.
