Mechanization Cuts Farm Labor Demand Across U.S.
Lincoln AP John Hopkins of Iowa State College told a migration committee that tractors better crops and animals feed and disease control reduced farm labor. He cited about 195 million man hours saved yearly to 1938 and an 11 percent drop in farm workers by 1939 despite population growth. He noted drought and AAA programs mainly shrank employment last decade. Gov Cochran praised Nebraska actions limiting population loss from 1930 to 1940 as the committee prepares 15 experts and 20 migrants from seven states to testify.
