Oak post marks historic survey of Iowa border
An 8 foot oak post stands in a roadside park along Highway 26 near New Albia to commemorate Iowa northern border survey history. Rich Leu of the Surveyors Historical Society notes the replica mirrors the original, though placed not exactly on the line. The marker honors the 43 degree 30 minute latitude set by Congress for the Mississippi to Big Sioux River boundary.

Conlin argues subsidies should aid independent family farms
Iowa Senate hopeful Roxanne Conlin says federal farm subsidies must favor independent family farms to sustain the 92 000 remaining. She notes farm consolidation and capital needs tilt benefits to large operations, while Grassley counters he aims to curb abuses in the safety net to aid family farms. A debate on farm programs is planned with Grassley on WHO Radio October 26.

Collins Lindale underpass plan seeks Iowa support
Vazette City officials seek funding from the Iowa Clean Air Attainment Program to build an underpass under Collins Road NE at Lindale Drive. The aim is to connect Lindale Mall with north of Collins Road, aiding pedestrians and bicyclists and possibly routing cars beneath Collins Road. City Engineering Manager Rob Davis notes crossing the widened highway is dangerous and slow for walkers. Comments to Rick Smith at gazcomm.
