President Bush will address Congress tonight urging an unprecedented federal commitment to rebuilding New Orleans and other Katrina devastations. The plan could exceed 200 billion dollars, matching the scale of Iraq war costs. The televised speech airs at 8 p.m. Iowa time.
U.S. Navy Ensign Michael Dobling, a native of Oxford Junction, operated a storm shelter for 800 civilians in a reinforced warehouse near the Gulf Coast during Hurricane Katrina. He earned the Navy Achievement Medal for the mission in Gulfport Mississippi.
Iowa dealers Ketelsen RV and others deliver 16 travel trailers to FEMA in Hiawatha for hurricane families. FEMA may buy up to 40 000 trailers nationwide to create makeshift housing. Trailers cost 12 000 to 20 000 dollars and are aimed at rapid deployment with basic amenities.
The House approved the Children’s Safety Act 371 to 52 adding strict monitoring for child sex offenders and up to 20 years for registration violations. A Conyers amendment expanded federal hate crime protections to include sexual orientation gender and disability victims.
The Iowa delegation largely supported the Child Safety Act with all in favor. Republican reps Leach and Nussle opposed the hate crimes amendment along with Boswell and King while Latham joined them in dissent. The piece notes Iowa laws tightening sex offender penalties.
Auto parts shops in Eastern Iowa report a rush to buy locking gas caps as gas tops $3 a gallon. Demand is so high some models are sold out. prices range 10 to 20 dollars. AutoZone Cedar Rapids saw over 350 calls and walk-ins in two days after Katrina.
