The Mustangs, led by Tiffiney Avenarius with seven kills in the final, defeated 2A No. 2 Charles City 15-8 1-15 15-10 to claim the Linn-Mar Invitational. Hempstead (9-0-0) captured the tournament for the third straight year as Regina, Prairie, and Cedar Rapids Prairie also posted strong pool play.

Cedar Rapids Kennedy graduate Brian Johnson finished third in the Ironman Boulder triathlon with a 10 hour 42 minute 36 second time. He swam 2.4 miles biked 112 miles and ran 26.2 miles, posting the day’s second best bike leg and a strong marathon, while expressing surprise at his late-race podium finish.
