Monks at New Melleray Abbey Grow Income Through Caskets
At New Melleray Abbey in Iowa the community aims to cover about 60 percent of its income from farming and a growing casket business. Abbot Brendan Freeman notes annual needs of 400000 while farm output includes cropland timber and organic products. Caskets start at 600 for pine and reach 1485 for walnut, with demand aided by a New York Times feature and a church site.
