New Type of Deafness Seen in Husbands Says Doctor

Dr George E Shambaugh Jr a Northwestern otolaryngology leader described a new form of deafness called husband deafness in which the wife notices the loss of hearing and the man does not complain Tests show normal hearing but attention fades during conversation He urged periodic hearing tests and lip reading and noted advances in treating conductive losses with possible restoration of normal or near normal hearing

Engineers to Hear Bucyrus Erie Chief Learmont

Bucyrus-Erie chief Thomas Learmont will address the northeast Iowa section of ASME on Wednesday at 7 30 p m in the Sheraton Montrose. He will review the design manufacture and operation of the world’s largest shovel built by his company now used by Peabody Coal Co Kentucky for deep strip mining. The shovel weighs more than a light navy cruiser stands 20 stories high and can move 115 yards or 200 tons of earth every 50 seconds.
