Fired Coe coach entitled to jobless pay hearing
A Job Service of Iowa hearing officer ruled Coe College failed to prove the former football coach violated athletic rules and that Roger L. Schlegel is entitled to unemployment benefits while not concurrently paid by Coe. The case noted Schlegel was fired last spring after signing for 1982-83 and faces a breach of contract suit. Coe argued misconduct for rule violations but offered no witnesses, leaving the record void of substantial evidence of intentional rule disregard. A separate wage-claim issue was remanded for a new hearing.
