Seamen Strike Upsets Atlantic Shipping Amid War Bonus Pressure
A seamen strike aimed at tying up Atlantic and Gulf ports went into effect halting several vessels carrying defense materials. The Seafarer's International Union demanded higher war bonuses from 60 to 250 dollars monthly for ships bound for war zones with lesser amounts for Bermuda and Caribbean routes. About 300 sailors refused to work in Weehawken, delaying the Cruise liner Snails and causing refunds for 325 passengers. Union leaders said the action targets Allied and axis ports, while ship operators argued some routes are not in war zones and bonuses should reflect port classifications.
