7 Percent tuition hike eyed for three state universities

State Board of Regents staff recommends a 7 percent in-state tuition rise for the University of Iowa Iowa State University and the University of Northern Iowa next year with out-of-state rates at the UI and ISU up 9 percent. Student groups plan a rally to demand a zero or near 3 percent increase and urge the regents to freeze tuition. The regents convene in Iowa City to discuss next year’s tuition.

Man fined for burying cash before bankruptcy

John Crane a 72 year old man was fined five thousand dollars for concealing twenty three thousand dollars in cash buried in a tin can before filing for bankruptcy in Cedar Rapids in May 1984. He later admitted burying the money and most of it likely would have remained his property had it been reported. The cash was sent to the Treasury for value assessment and authorities noted about twenty one thousand five hundred dollars came from an investment retirement account.

Expo posts at least 100000 profit for World Ag Expo

Expo Director Ron Moser reports attendance and goals exceeded expectations and the event finished in the black with a projected surplus of at least $100,000. The final figure will be announced later this month and the excess will be split equally among non profit groups.

World Ag Expo profits and funding details

The World Ag Expo organized by the Amana Society and the Iowa City Chamber of Commerce aimed to break even. Budgeted at 750000 dollars, it drew about 300000 in advance funding from six corporations and 21 sponsors. Revenue included 325000 from exhibitors and 100000 from the Iowa Department of Economic Development. About 355000 attendees over four days paid 2 dollars daily or 3.50 for the period.
