Grand event planned for Nature Trail opening

The Cedar Valley Nature Trail in Linn County is opening this Sunday with a 1:30 p.m. ribbon cutting at the Boyson Road trailhead in Hiawatha. Iowa Rails to Trails Inc and the Linn County Conservation Board organize the event with public officials, scouts, and several groups hosting bike rides, walks, and a pancake breakfast in Center Point to support depot restoration.

Judge denies bid to bar Cedar Valley Nature Trail opening

Judge Harold Swailes refused a motion by James and Mildred Jordan to bar use of their land along the Cedar Valley Nature Trail for Linn County’s grand opening ceremony. The Jordans claim ownership of the abandoned railroad right of way north of Robins, while sponsors said the event would proceed even if an injunction had been granted, detouring the disputed land.

Marion sergeant appeals one day suspension after on duty crash

Marion police sergeant Gordon Dolley appealed a one day suspension issued after an on duty crash at 3 49 a m July 13 in the 1000 block of Fifth Avenue. The hearing is set for Thursday at Marion City Hall. Dolley reported injuries and took at least two days off. repairs to the squad car cost 189 while the pole suffered 125 in damage.

Cedar Rapids Attorney Cleared of Contempt Charge

U.S. District Judge William C. Stuart ruled Cedar Rapids attorney Peter Riley was not shown to have willfully disobeyed a court order for a client’s sentencing, though both Riley and his father Tom Riley receive reprimands for their conduct. The ruling follows a prior contempt finding by Judge Edward McManus and an 8th Circuit remand. Peter Riley expressed satisfaction that the case is closed as the elder Riley bore most blame.

Marijuana plants found in Epworth raid 30 year old man arrested

Dubuque County deputies seized nearly a pickup load of marijuana and arrested James Foreman after serving a search warrant at a rural Epworth residence Monday. Foreman faced charges of attempt to deliver and manufacture a controlled substance and posted bond to be released. Aerial survey prompted the warrant revealing marijuana plants and drug paraphernalia on the Foreman property.

U of Iowa Cheerleaders Judge Eastern Iowa Contest

Four members of the University of Iowa cheerleading squad will judge the third annual Eastern Iowa Cheerleading Contest on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. in the Westdale Mall parking lot. Awards ceremony follows Cedar Rapids 3A competition

Cedar Rapids 3A High schools and Prairie, Marion, Dyersville Beckman compete with prizes in a mall center court awards event. The top squad in each category earns 50 toward the school pep club, a trophy for the school and medals for the cheerleaders, with second and third place prizes also awarded.
