Iowa Governor Herschel C. Loveless announced on Friday his plan to raise appropriations for old age assistance benefits. He urged a ten million dollar increase to establish a medical care program under old age assistance, creating a new Iowa program.

The governor proposes about 1 million dollars more for shelter and nursing care costs for old age assistance recipients. He also intends to expand the dependent children program to cover medical expenses and drug costs. The medical care provision would be included in the aid to the blind program.

Hayrack Collision Injures Nine Near Ames
Nine youths and eight adults riding on a school hayrack were injured when a car collided with a double hayrack tow northeast of Ames. Arthur Barton, 19, of near Nevada, identified as the driver, aided by two companions who boarded the hayrack before Barton left, later colliding with the second section and overturning the first. Injured were treated at Nevada and Ames hospitals.

OCDM Promotes 40 Million Basement Bomb Shelters
DES MOINES AP Officials from the Office of Civilian Defense Mobilization say pamphlets urging basement bomb shelter construction will be mailed to about 40 million homes next month. Clyde H. Hendrix announced the plan at a meeting of the Iowa Interprofessional Association. The group, formed by the Iowa State Medical Society, coordinates disaster prep with hospitals and professionals. The program envisions integrating county committees with city and county hospitals as hubs. Medical schools are adding disaster treatment courses, and one goal is civilian defense with one trained first responder in every home.
