Avoidance Play in a Notrump Contract Demonstrated
The article explains the avoidance play in contract bridge. It contrasts the dangerous defender with the other and shows how a declarer, here South, uses tricks of the trade to prevent the dangerous hand from gaining the lead. The example notes East West vulnerability and a sequence ending with South as dealer.
West Hands North a Complex Diamond Contract Game
North raised to two notrump and West opened seven of diamonds. South led to the Jack to signal a five card diamond suit, testing East. After a sequence of strategic ducking and finesses, West underled the Ace on the heart lead, East produced the heart ace, and South held the club and spade finesses to complete the four trick win, securing the game.
