Patricia Sewell 47 was beaten robbed and stuffed in a car trunk and survived 36 hours in heat by thinking of Gulf War troops in Saudi Arabia. She was rescued after schoolchildren heard noises from the trunk and authorities charged Robert Eddy 18 with attempted murder kidnapping and robbery.

Maggie York defeats incumbent Glenn Selzer in College Community district with a 256 to 120 vote. York, of 3422 Dunham Dr Sr., was not reachable for comment. Selzer, the former business manager and longtime board member since the 1950s, calls the write-in race unethical and bitterly criticizes the campaign. Linda Schlesselman succeeds in district two. The district has approved bonds totaling 10.6 million for high school improvements amid ongoing debates on levy funding and busing, construction delays, and gym speedups for Prairie High School.
Penwest Ltd. of Bellevue announces an $8.5 million subsidiary plant at First Street and Eighth Avenue SW in southwest Cedar Rapids on land owned by Penford Products Co. The Edward Mendell Co. facility will produce microcrystalline cellulose used as a binding agent and fat substitute, employing 17 workers with a $850,000 annual payroll and an average $35,000 salary.
Senator Tom Harkin tried to move 3.1 billion from defense to health and education programs on the Labor HHS Education bill. The amendment violated the 1990 budget summit agreement and failed 69 to 28 as Grassley joined the majority. Byrd opposed, saying it would unravel the budget deal.
Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas told senators he believes a basic right to privacy exists but refused to say whether it includes abortion. He acknowledged a privacy right while declining to comment on the 1973 abortion decision.
Anamosa's Ward 2 includes 1 157 inmates and 122 free residents under new ward boundaries approved by the City Council using 1990 census data. Only 15 inmates may vote locally while the inmate population shapes district totals. options include reducing wards to three or expanding to five or electing members at large.
