Median on First Avenue West remains for safety reasons
City Hall reports the Iowa Department of Transportation denied Mayor Canney’s request to remove 220 feet of the First Avenue West median between Second and Third streets. The IDOT says the median is needed to curb turning moves near I-380 ramps and to keep traffic safe with 18 000 vehicles per day, noting removal would set a bad precedent and worsen operational issues. Dairy Queen operator Dick Stanek sought the change to gain left turns into his business.
