Tropical Storm Kathleen slammed into Southern California causing a 4 to 6 foot wall of water that swept through Ocotillo and nearby areas. At least two people were killed and many motorists and campers were stranded as highways and bridges were washed away.

Six hijackers calling themselves Fighters for Free Croatia seized a New York to Chicago TWA flight with 92 aboard and diverted it to Canada, later directing police to an unexploded bomb in New York City. One policeman died and three were injured as experts attempted to disarm the device. The group warned of another bomb in the United States unless an eight page communique appeared in major papers. Police found a pressure cooker in Grand Central Station containing a communique and possibly explosives. The jet then traveled toward Gander, Newfoundland, refueling in Montreal amid reports the hijackers wanted London. Passengers on board did not alight in Montreal.
Government projections for the nation’s largest corn harvest on record shriveled to 5.89 billion bushels after the third driest August in Iowa. Illinois yields hold 98 bushels per acre with a 1.136 billion bushel crop while South Dakota and Minnesota face 30 and 70 bushel yields. State climatologist Paul Waite notes the drought’s impact and storage factors influence the market.
Reynolds Industries Inc and its Sea-Land unit reported about 25 million dollars in questionable payments from 1968 to last year. The filings to the SEC say 190 thousand dollars in domestic political contributions were made, with recipients undisclosed. Sea-Land allegedly issued over 19 million dollars in rebates to customers worldwide, including 11.5 million tied to Atlantic shipping and 7 million to Sea-Land Pacific operations.
Washington AP The House voted 276 to 33 to ban postal rate hikes through March 15 1977 and to authorize $1 billion in two installments to ease the deficit while a study commission reviews funding services and rates. President Ford is expected to sign the bill, a temporary measure delaying a full solution.
