President Roosevelt created a five member board to investigate the wide rail strike dispute involving 900000 non operating union members and 350000 operating workers. The board must report within 30 days and no strike can start for another 30 days after the report. The carriers seek higher pay while unions demand sizable increases.

The American freight er Sessa, en route from New York to Reykjavik Iceland, was torpedoed without warning and then shelled by a submarine presumed to be German. Survivors aboard the Lansdale reported the ship sank two minutes after the initial torpedo hit. The divers included H K Bjerre jaarad a Danish subject G L T Ljunggren a Swedish subject and J De Oliveira Correia a Portuguese citizen. The survivors were later landed in Iceland.
Des Moines AP Leslie M Carl, federal agricultural statistician, forecast Iowa corn this year at 433,248,000 bushels based on Sept 1 conditions, about 47.5 bushels per acre. The figure is 4.5 bushels per acre below the Aug 1 estimate due to heat damage earlier this month, versus 474,292,000 bushels last year and a 1940 average of 51 bushels per acre.
The Agriculture Department on Wednesday estimated 1941 corn production at 2,523,964,000 bushels with an average yield of 29.4 bushels per acre. Wheat production was estimated at 957,563,000 bushels, up about 6.5 million from last month and well above 1940’s 816,698,000 bushels.
Leon E. Morse of Council Bluffs was elevated to president of the Iowa Association of Insurance Agents at the annual Montrose hotel convention. George Cockburn of Cedar Rapids became executive vice president. John S. Cutter of Shenandoah re-elected secretary treasurer. B C Hopkins of Des Moines national councilor. Lyle M. Jefferies of Clinton named executive committee chair. The group reported a peak 507 active members, up from 475.
