Crime drop in the United States reaches record two-year decline

FBI data show a 7 percent fall in serious crime from 1982 to 1983, the first back-to-back drop in 24 years. Murders and robberies fell 8 percent, arson 11 percent, and aggravated assault 2 percent, while rape barely changed.

Hijackers head for Iraq after 52 escape from jet

An Iran Air Boeing 727 hijacked on a domestic Iran flight was flown to Iraq after 52 passengers escaped during a Cairo stop to evacuate a wounded person. The flight carried 62 passengers nine crew and five hijackers, with 123 passengers reported by state agency. The hijackers were former military policemen. The incident followed two other Iran Air hijackings this month.
