The senate approved a budget blueprint with a 412.8 billion dollar spending ceiling and a 362 billion dollar revenue floor for the next year, forecasting a 50.8 billion dollar deficit. Ford projects a 398.8 billion dollar outlay and a 47.5 billion dollar gap.
The Federal Trade Commission said after tax profits for manufacturers averaged 5.9 cents per dollar of sales in the second quarter, up from 5.2 cents in Q1 and 4.7 cents a year ago. Details on page 24.

Ford met Polish leaders and addressed PolishAmerican concerns as Carter toured Polish Hill in Pittsburgh.
Gov. George Wallace says a bedroom tapping system is a private domestic issue not tied to his governorship or Alabama politics. Troopers found devices and tapes at the mansion amid reports he ordered his wife, Cornelia, from the home. Wallace avoided specifics, noting the matter concerns his wife and him.
The Iowa Assn of Chiefs of Police voted 10 to 0 not to intervene in the Cedar Rapids Police Chief Wallace LaPeters firing. LaPeters urged a letter of support during a 45 minute address, but by-laws prohibit active involvement in local disputes. The three day meeting closed with officials hoping for resolution.
