USDA and UP reports show cattle hogs and sheep receipts with mixed price shifts. Cattle calves and steers mostly steady to up, heifers weak, hogs mostly steady to higher, sows firm, lamb values holding firm. Des Moines and Chicago markets list bid ranges for various weight classes and grades.
US cattle report shows salable 23 000 calves 600 fed steers and heifers down 25 cents to 50 cents. Cows weak to 50 lower, bulls 25 lower. Feeders and stockers around 35 percent of receipts with yearlings steady. Prices listed for various weight classes and grades including several loads high choice to prime at 25.75 to 26.25 and heifers up to 23.50 for yearlings.
The Sioux City market shows cattle trading very slow with steers and heifers 25 to 50 lower and weaker demand on choice. Low bids slow cow trading while bulls hold steady. Prime load around 1,225 lb steers at 27.00 with early choice heifers 22.00 to 23.50 and stockers 23.50 to 24.50 for 550 to 700 lb cattle. cows unavailable for quotes.
Prices on the Cedar Rapids hog market were steady to a dime lower with plant delivered quotes for No 2 butchers and sows. Higher grade hogs and sows up to 50c over these quotes. Sheep prices listed for prime spring lambs and ewes with ranges for old crop and shorn types. Grain and poultry prices included with corn soybeans and eggs noted.
New York markets saw stocks ease with copper shares among the laggards. Pivotal issues posted fractional to about two point losses as volume traded reached 1,420,000.
Cedar Rapids city officials report new traffic signals on Sixth Street SW at Wilson Avenue are now operating. Services for Dr. Frank L. Griffith 74 retired who died Sunday in Mercy hospital will be held Tuesday at 9 30 a m in St Patrick s church. He was born December 25 1882 on a farm west of Monmouth educated at Iowa University medical school 1905 and did post graduate work in Chicago. He practiced at Cascade Prairieburg Baldwin until retirement in 1954 and moved to Anamosa in 1956. Survived by wife Mary Gorman of Anamosa a son Leo of Denver and a daughter Lorraine Strauss of Des Moines.
Mrs. Harry Schrader of Hawkeye died Sunday in a West Union hospital after a stay since August 5. She is survived by her husband, a partner in Schrader and Engel Lumber Co., and a son. Services set for Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Methodist church. Body remained at Emerson funeral home.
