Iowa destroys eight mold damaged Civil War flags

Iowa officials disposed of eight Grand Army of the Republic flags damaged by mold and sewage more than 25 years ago after a long de accession. The flags dated to the early 1900s and likely served as graveside memorials. The state moved its museum collections in Des Moines and the flags were deemed too degraded to save. The remaining GAR flags in the collection are kept in cabinets and four other GAR flags survive.
