Monticello man drowns in Wapsie River

An 18 year old rural Monticello youth drowned early Sunday evening in the Wapsipinicon River at Pinicon Ridge Park near Central. Thomas Ahlrichs swam with friends when the current pulled him away and he slipped beneath the surface. His body was recovered about an hour later by Limn County sheriff's deputies and Central City fire units.

Could have been their last dance in Iowa City

Iowa City police received a late night call from a motorist who claimed to have almost struck two women tap-dancing on Clinton Street between Dodge and Governor. An officer warned the dancers that street dancing after dark could be dangerous, but the women were not located.

A male passenger aboard an Eastern Airlines Boeing 727 hijacked after departing New York. he demanded Cuba. The jet landed safely in Havana at 11 52 a.m. local time. Officials note this was the third recent Eastern hijack to Cuba amid a spate of similar incidents this year.
