Official Prison Riot Carefully Planned
Des Moines reports say the Fort Madison State Prison disturbance was a carefully planned uprising by a small group of inmates aimed at thwarting unitization. Ray Cornell, prison ombudsman, testified that the riot was not spontaneous and reflected opposition to Gov. Ray's blue ribbon committee plan to divide the prison into units. He noted inmates fear a radical change in prison lifestyle despite the plan allowing more specialized treatment.
