Family saves Elkader home from smoking porch fire
An Anamosa family visiting Elkader intervened as smoke and a smoldering fire spread from Burdett's porch. Shannon and Stacey Appleby and their son Tyler used water, a cooler, a hose, and quick entry through smoke to rescue a dog and limit damage before firefighters arrived. The fire started from a cigarette butt.
