A state board approved a court settlement of 925000 to six plaintiffs over the 1939 Monster Study at the University of Iowa. Dr Wendell Johnson and staff tested 22 orphans to prove stuttering was learned, with some children harassed to induce stuttering.

Interim Cedar Rapids chief injured in rear-end crash
Hiawatha interim Police Chief Gary Manhart, 48, was hospitalized after his car was struck from behind at a stoplight at the Blairs Ferry Road Interstate 380 interchange. A Las Vegas man, William R. Jenkins, 59, was charged in Cedar Rapids federal court with six counts of wire fraud for defrauding Life Investors Insurance Co. by obtaining policies on seriously ill individuals and misrepresenting health and employment on applications. Co schemers allegedly paid premiums and sought benefits after deaths. Trial set for Oct. 22. he was released after Aug. 31 appearance.
