New Crop Report Policy Aims to Help Farmers and Traders
Washington officials announced a new USDA policy to disclose crop prospect information to give farmers a fairer view of 1974 outlook alongside big commodity traders. The first report will come after September 11 with projections for crops like rice and soybeans next year, based on agency data. Weir said details will be public, though no fixed schedule is set, and reports will align with monthly 1974 crop estimates.

Rail Diversions Tied to Small Cedar Rapids Yards
Rail diversions blamed on limited Cedar Rapids yards cause cars to be parked on sidings up to 40 miles away. Richard Petska of the Cedar Rapids Chamber of Commerce Transportation Bureau says yards are too small and railways stagger cars on sidings to fit traffic. The Interstate Commerce Commission has ordered railroads to own more than 20 percent of unit grain hopper cars, a move Petka says may affect grain shipments west.
