UPI reports a large communist force bombarded the Duc Phong special forces camp 79 miles northeast of Saigon using over 300 rounds of artillery before a ground assault. Casualties included three killed and seven wounded among American and South Vietnamese irregular troops as fighting details remained unclear after the dawn attack.
South Vietnam spurns a 72 hour cease fire for Ho Chi Minh death as Da Nang attack leaves 163 allied casualties. Battles north of Saigon near An Loc produce heavy fighting with over 200 communist deaths and 7 Americans killed. Ambush near An Loc repelled with 15 enemy dead and 4 captured.
President Nixon, during his vacation at the Western White House, delayed a second troop withdrawal decision amid pressure to join a three day cease fire tied to Ho Chi Minh's funeral. Aides said any move would come from South Vietnam command after evaluating factors, with announcement expected days or weeks after returning to Washington. Senate Leader Mansfield urged an unlimited cease fire and withdrawal.
The Public Health Service was urged by the House crime committee to prepare a thorough public report on marijuana use and its effects. Rep Claude Pepper compared the need to the 1964 Smoking and Health report and cited concerns about penalties and the scientific debate surrounding marijuana.
Washington AP reports Defense Secretary Laird temporarily halted new military construction awards totaling about $700 million to ease economic strain per President Nixon’s order. Projects affected include family housing and reserve facilities, with reports due by Sept. 10 to decide which to drop.
The note from Elbrick's kidnappers says he is safe and will be freed once 15 political prisoners reach Mexico. The Brazilian airlift will pick up those prisoners near Rio with a C 130 mission, aiming to deliver Elbrick after their safe arrival in Mexico.
Pamela Anne Eldred a 21 year old ballet dancer from Birmingham Michigan was named Miss America 1970 in Atlantic City amid feminist protests. Eldred has been Detroit City Ballet lead dancer since age 13 and trains since age six. A Mercy College of Detroit senior she aims for Broadway musical theater after graduation and performed a classical ballet for her talent.
Virginia Knauer, Nixon special assistant for consumer affairs, charged defective and poorly designed medical equipment kills Americans and urged federal standards for the industry. She cited heart pacemakers and artificial kidneys as examples, noting devices lack drug and auto safety protections and testing. The speech was given to the National Conference on Medical Devices in Bethesda Maryland ahead of legislative recommendations.
The Rt. Rev. John Hines says a de nominalional decision may stir tempers yet deepen church bonds. The church approves funding of 200000 to the Black Economic Development Conference and recognizes Negro progress as self determined.
