Iowa forecast calls for cloudiness with scattered showers in the south and extreme west, cooler in the southeast. Temperatures range from around 45 to 73 across regions, with northeasterly winds at 15 mph. Also included are divorce notices, local court actions, traffic fines, and birth announcements from Mercy and St. Luke's hospitals along with obituary notes for John Loven and Charles Drafahl.
Iowa postmasters gather for a three day convention starting September 14 with talks from top postal officials and a Pitney Bowes representative. Four to five hundred delegates expected. Jesse M. Donaldson will give the keynote address broadcast nationwide September 15. A corn contest and tours of local plants will accompany the sessions.
In Lansing Michigan President Truman was surprised Monday when Republican Governor Kim Sigler greeted him at the train. Truman joked he had the governor at the White House and would see him there again before leaving. Sigler then walked away into the crowd as the president spoke on campaign issues.
Ralph Scherer aged 16 from near Blue Grass remained in Mercy hospital after being thrown through a truck windshield when the vehicle hit a hole on highway 61 west of Davenport. His jugular vein was nearly severed in the Monday night accident. the truck was driven by Walter Oebel Jr. of Blue Grass.
The Cedar Rapids Chamber of Commerce Retail Merchants bureau will hold two Christmas committee meetings in the Chamber building at 3 p.m. on Wednesday. The parade committee and the decorations committee will discuss plans as holiday preparations begin.
James Thomas Goudy 88 of 2377 Blake boulevard SE Cedar Rapids died at home Monday at 1 p.m. from a heart attack. Born May 14 1860 near Linn Grove he lived in Linn county most of his life later moving to Marion and Cedar Rapids. Survived by wife Ada M. Yount a daughter a sister and three brothers. Services Wednesday 1 30 p.m. at Turner chapel with burial in Oak Shade cemetery Marion.
The obituary notes a son named David Sharpe of Mason City and five grandchildren. It records Mrs. Sharpe of Daniels Park Presbyterian church and kin in Chicago and Downers Grove Illinois. Burial is in Cedar Memorial cemetery after a Turner chapel service led by Rev F A Mun nek.
Figures from the traffic bureau of the police department show two deaths and eight injuries in Cedar Rapids since March 15 as part of an eight month safety contest sponsored by the Young Men's bureau.

Mrs. Ida M. Keating widow of James E. Keating and Cedar Rapids visitor died in Chicago Monday night. She leaves three sisters Mrs. J. D. Stickley and Mrs. Margaret Hall of Cedar Rapids and Mrs. John Moran of Chicago. Funeral at 2 p.m. Thursday at Wyoming cemetery Wyoming Ia. Rev. J. P. Van Horn to conduct. Friends may call Turner chapel Wednesday and until noon Thursday.
Mrs. John W. Auman of Marion route one died in a Cedar Rapids hospital at 3 30 p m Monday after a brief illness. Born April 29 1866 in Linn county she married George Auman December 30 1903 in Marion. Survived by husband son Orville M. Auman of Marion and brother J E Dicken of Toddville. Burial in Lafayette cemetery Lafayette. Visitation at the chapel.
Ted Hlubucek editor of the Cedar Rapids Listy reports from Czechoslovakia that about 80 percent of Czechs are prepared to risk their lives in a revolt against the Communists. He cites anti Communist moves in Europe strengthening Czech resolve to overthrow the Reds if needed.
Permission granted to Kowa l Illinois Gas and Electric Co to install 435 feet west from Oakland avenue and 274 feet north 43 feet south into Daniels street parking. Additional mains extend 324 feet between E and F avenues NW near Thirteenth street and 1,346 feet along Nineteenth street NW. Edgewood road NW to Johnson avenue and Wilson avenue SW segment complete the plan. Also approved trading a 1937 Chevrolet for a 1948 Chevrolet sedan for the streets department.
Henry Harrison Buresh aged 66 died at his Fairfax home at 4 p.m. Monday after a lingering illness. He was born May 8, 1889 and was longtime Fairfax resident. He served in World War I and belonged to Fidelitas lodge No. 364 A F and A M Fairest chapter No. 382 O E S and a charter member of Pekomy Post No. 572 American Legion. He married Georgia Dvorak on February 4, 1920 in Ely, who survives with three sons Kenneth Lloyd and Henry Jr all at home. He leaves seven brothers including John J Steven M Alben S Edward Milo of Fairfax and Joseph of Eagle Butte and two sisters Mildred Buresh and Mrs Clarence Gibson of Fairfax. Services set for 2 p.m. Thursday at Barta Hesser chapel with Rev W C Cleworth and Fidelitas lodge. Burial in Cedar Rapids.
Patrick Knowles aged 73, a former employee of the B C R N railway, died Sunday morning in Sioux City after a long illness. Survived by wife, three daughters in Sioux City, three sisters in Montana and South Dakota, two brothers in Cedar Rapids. Funeral services set for 10 am Wednesday in Sioux City.
Henry William Moses aged 57 of four miles northeast of Ely died in a Cedar Rapids hospital at 2 30 a m Tuesday after a long illness. Born July 17 1890 in Ely he lived there all his life. A World War I veteran he belonged to the Ely American Legion post. Surviving are a daughter Mrs Joseph Divisek Cedar Rapids route 2 a son Henry at home a grandson a sister Mrs Frank Koutny Cedar Rapids route 2 and a brother Joseph of near Ely. Services will be held at 2 p m Thursday at Rogers Grove church near Ely with Rev Ludvik Burian. Military services will follow at Bohemian National cemetery Cedar Rapids conducted by the Ely post American Legion. Friends may call at the Brosh chapel in Cedar Rapids.
At San Francisco Fleishacker Zoo seven year old elephant May slipped from a concrete platform into an eight foot moat while reaching for a peanut. Workers built a ramp to retrieve her as director Cary Baldwin joked about May staying in the moat longer.
Diana Marie Long, 12 days old and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard E. Long of 1006 Third Street SE, died at 6 p.m. Saturday in a Cedar Rapids hospital. Surviving are her parents, a brother Richard Allen, grandparents James Long and Michael Kapsalakis, two great-grandmothers, private services were held at Brush chapel and burial followed at Cedar Memorial cemetery.
Miss Margaret Mary Gahan of 220 Fifth Street NW died Sunday in a Cedar Rapids hospital. Services are set for 9 a.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick's Church with Rt. Rev. Msgr. D. J. Lenihan officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Rosaries are planned Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. by the Knights of Columbus and 8 p.m. by Msgr. Lenihan. callers may visit the mortuary. Her name was previously misprinted as Grahan in yesterday's Gazette.
At Morrell packing plant in Ottumwa Iowa the pork cut division was indefinitely suspended leaving 150 workers idle. A CIO Packinghouse Workers local mass meeting planned a strike vote while other departments including trimming room green grading and fresh meat halted as hog kill operations stopped due to full coolers.
The three boys Francis Pameticky 10 Ernest Pameticky 8 and Richard Angell 9 pulled Ronald Farr 2 from the Cedar River near L avenue NW on Sunday. They told his mother they saw the child face down and pulled him out before fleeing. Farr was revived by his father with artificial respiration and taken to the hospital for evaluation.

Washington officials report Moscow formally asks that the Big Four foreign ministers meet before Sept 15 to discuss Italy's prewar African colonies. The proposal follows failure of the four powers to agree on any aspect of the issue since the 1945 peace treaty, with the Sept 15 deadline tied to UN General Assembly submission.
Finance Commissioner Louis D. Burgos submitted the monthly statement to the council showing August receipts of 101077.85 dollars and disbursements of 248800.05 dollars. The August 31 balance was 992092.28 dollars with total expenditures to date 958263.49 and 1677277.45 dollars available to spend in the rest of the year.

George Scurlock wins a class C beer permit for 1407 Fifteenth street SE. Lumir E. Kovar obtains a class B beer permit at 862 Fifth avenue SE after Joseph F. Horak received a $225 refund for his permit at that address. Kovar also gets a cigaret license and Horak receives a $75 refund for an unexpired permit.
Police Chief Fred A. Carstens reports the department collected 5292 dollars and 46 cents in August. Fines brought in 4173 dollars and courts 563 dollars, forming the bulk of the total.

Jarvis Duffy, 63, was struck by a car and knocked onto streetcar tracks in St Paul. The crowd urged stopping the streetcar as Ronald Urban, 16, stood by after the collision. The streetcar passed, fatally running over Duffy, who died instantly.
A class B beer permit is issued to Rapids Amusement Company at 226 First Avenue E, pending approval by building and police departments. The firm also gets a cigaret permit after Mirror Lounge Inc received a $75 license refund for the same address. An additional cigaret permit is granted to Paul Wieneke for 123 Eighth Avenue SW.
Robert Fryrear reports his clothes were stolen from the Marion swimming pool check room on Monday afternoon. He later found the basket in the locker room with his clothes still inside and a watch and $4 missing.
Mrs Walter Sharpe aged 68 of 201512 Johnson avenue NW Cedar Rapids died at her home at 3 30 p m She was born December 15 1879 in Northfield and came to Cedar Rapids from Estherville in 1928 She married Walter Sharpe February 3 1903 at Mediapolis She leaves three daughters Neva Sharpe and Ione Sharpe plus another daughter.
James L. Clark, 22, of El Reno Oklahoma, received a $100000 out of court settlement from Rock Island after a July train collision accident. Clark lost both legs while attempting to avert the wreck at Clinton Oklahoma and remains hospitalized. He plans voice training for an opera career.
Des Moines figure George Olmsted will address the United World Federalists at the Roosevelt Hotel at 6 30 p m Wednesday. Olmsted serves as state president and the University of Iowa chapter sponsors the event.
Leominster Massachusetts AP report says Simon Caisse 71 reported a stolen $60 pocket watch that was not working Two months later the watch was found inside his rear screen door and now runs again.
Charles Buresh a 15 year old from 626 Second Street SW suffered a possible fractured leg in a sandlot football game on the Roosevelt high school field. He was taken to Mercy hospital by ambulance where his condition was listed as good Tuesday.
Five year old Connie Findley daughter of Mr and Mrs Stanley Findley of 1225 Sixteenth Avenue SW sustained a cut over her right eye and head injuries Monday morning after running into a car near her home. She was taken to Mercy hospital by Ambulance Service. The car driver was John Nanktgeboren of 1255 Sixteenth Avenue SW.
Harold G. Biggart 30 of 930 Eighth Avenue SE and Everett Omar Montross 42 of 2621 Wilson Avenue SW pled innocent before Judge Floyd Philbrick to lascivious acts with a minor. Montross posted 1500 cash bond while Biggart is held on 2000 bail. Detectives Bukacek Kuba and Navratil arrested them Saturday evening in Linn County.
Clinton L. Caldwell of New York City pleaded innocent in Judge Floyd Philbrick's court to a forgery charge. He allegedly forged the name Carl R. Roberts to a $45.14 check at Merchants National Bank, given to E. R. Thomas who cashed it after restitution of part of the sum.

He condemned intoxicants, traced Islam’s tenets, and described Arab geography noting Arabs seek peace and self government rather than communism or imperialism.

The cabbie demanded 12 dollars to clean the upholstery as Metcalf stood at the hospital door. The 1927 model car had caused him trouble since purchase weeks earlier.
Cedar Rapids police seek Howard J. Wethington of Indianapolis in connection with a $305 theft from a room in the Allison hotel. The money was reported missing by Harry Thompson of Indianapolis, who said it was in a lock box in a suitcase. Wethington, Thompson’s roommate, is also missing.
