President Bush quickly nominates John Roberts to be chief justice days after Chief Justice Rehnquist's death. The move raises the stakes for his confirmation hearings and intensifies debate over the second Supreme Court vacancy.
Senate hearings for John Roberts to replace O Connor are postponed until later this week or next, due to Chief Justice Rehnquist's funeral. Rehnquist lies in repose today and will be buried Wednesday as Bush searches for a female nominee to keep the court’s gender balance.
Cedar Rapids museum spotlights Grant Wood at its 5 Turner Alley exhibit running through December 4. The show features about 180 works including lesser-known pieces such as Victorian Survival, a 1931 brown-toned portrait on loan from the Dubuque Museum of Art, with director Terry Pitts praising its photographic feel.
About 275 volunteers assisted in Cedar Rapids housing preparations for hurricane evacuees at Cedar Valley Apartments, working on more units than expected.
