Alta Mitchell, 93, died Thursday in Virginia Gay Annex after an extended illness. Graveside services 10:30 a.m. at Spring Grove Cemetery near Covington conducted by Rev. Jim Blair. She is survived by son Gene Spicer and Kaylene of Vinton and grandchildren Linda Fox, Ron Spicer, Dennis Spicer, Scott McNeal, Todd Spicer, plus five great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by her husband Howard Mitchell and her parents and brother Willard Comp.

UI Athletic Learning Center opens to aid Hawkeyes
The University of Iowa dedicated the 4.6 million Gordin Athletic Learning Center a 19000 square foot facility west of the Boyd Law Building at 402 Melrose Ave. It offers a library computer labs tutoring space and offices for academic staff funded by donations including a 4 million gift from Russell and Ann Gerdin.
