A new study finds that poor schools lag behind wealthy ones in computer use, with affluent districts four times likelier to possess them. The report notes rapid spread across classrooms this year despite gaps in funding and access.
The Districtwide Parents' Organization of the Iowa City school district hosts a meet the candidates event from 7 30 to 9 tonight in the West High School little theater. Penn State, which plays Iowa in two weeks, tumbled from fourth to 20th in the AP college football poll.

Grantsville mayor J Keith Brown, 76, faces immediate removal after a Tooele County jury found him guilty of acting as mayor in the shooting of three of four stray and pet dogs last year. The case centers on dog killings at Brown’s farm and the subsequent discovery of 19 canine carcasses on his land.
The Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Telethon raised 30.69 million dollars nationally as Eastern Iowans contributed over 214000 through special events and phone pledges across Cedar Rapids pledge centers. Lewis appeared in good health after a near fatal heart attack during the 18th telethon on KGAN TV.
Challenger completed a flawless eight flight with a first night launch and landing in California. Lt Gen James Abrahamson praised the mission as fabulous while commander Richard Truly called the landing perfect and fun. Guion Bluford and Dale Gardner hailed the shuttle's future as a milestone for spaceflight. The crew, welcomed at Johnson Space Center by 300 people, noted a successful mission despite a lingering toilet issue. The next flight using Columbia is planned for Oct 28 with Spacelab.
The Gazette corrects that Tomma Chambers was the driver of the car that crashed into a Champion Auto Stores window on Collins Road SE after brake failure. Officials supplied inaccurate information earlier and the paper will publish corrections and clarifications as needed. Los Angeles origins are noted from 1781.

A 22-year-old Waterloo man, Duane Eddy Wright, was charged with murdering 59-year-old Louis Nicholas Reuter after his body was found stabbed in an alley. Wright’s 18-year-old brother, Donnell Larry Wright, is in custody as a witness, with another suspect still sought. Police say robbery was the motive and that the murder weapon may be recovered.
