Iowa pushes helmet law as cycle deaths rise in 1973
Public Safety Commissioner Michael Sellers urged a mandatory helmet rule after August 1973 set a new death record for Iowa motorcyclists. He cited 18 deaths in August and for 1973 a projected worst-year ever with only 10 of 62 riders wearing helmets. He predicted passage in the 1974 session, noting 43 unhelmeted and nine undetermined cases, and said enforcement hinges on legislative action.
