Five Die In Head-On Crash Near Winthrop Iowa
Special to The Gazette reports a holiday weekend tragedy near Winthrop Iowa as five vacationers died in a head-on collision on a straight stretch of highway 20 two miles east of Winthrop. Victims include Edward A. Kohlmeyer 67, his wife 65 Gertrude Mann 46 and Bernice Peters 31 all of Round Lake Illinois. Lloyd Howard 33 of Marshalltown and his wife and children were hospitalized after the crash. Howard died later at Independence Hospital.

Auto crash near Sigourney claims two lives
An Omaha woman Lois Heitmeier aged about 39 and her son Charles 12 were killed when their car collided with a Minneapolis and St. Louis freight train on Highway 149 near Sigourney. Max Heitmeier, 39, driver, and Carole 7, passenger, survived with injuries.
