Van Nostrand Sees Iowa Farmers Short-Changed on Transport
Maurice Van Nostrand, chairman of the Iowa Commerce Commission, criticizes inadequate rail transportation harming farmers. He cites elevator firms shipping corn by truck to Des Moines due to poor track conditions, proposes railroad equipment leasing or IPERS-funded purchases, and warns of grain carryover as exports lag. Railroads have improved capacity but obsolescent facilities persist, with barges and river locks needing repair and limited 24/7 loading. Van Nostrand urges a state transportation department to modernize Iowa’s system.
