Russell Wilson, 44, of Torrance California lost both legs after a westbound truck collided with a cattle spill on the Kansas turnpike near Wichita. A station wagon struck a steer, pinning Wilson against the car and sending Byers to a hospital with minor injuries.
The storm flooded canals and basements across Amana clusters and Cedar Rapids, with the Iowa river at 15 feet and rainfall 4 to 6 inches. Lightning struck transformers and barns, destroying a barn and hay, injuring no one seriously. Airports and utilities faced outages and damaged planes, with widespread temporary outages in Iowa City and Des Moines.
The Iowa League of Municipalities big city group will hold a legislative committee meeting at City Hall on Friday to consider proposals for the next general assembly. Recommendations will be sent to the large city group in Sioux City later. Committee members include Safety Commissioner Bob Johnson and Mayor Jim Meaghan chairs the large-city group.

Emma H. Hagenstein 80 of 204 Twelfth St SE died Thursday. Born December 6 1877 in Franklin County she taught in numerous Iowa South Dakota Wyoming and Ohio schools for 35 years and later did secretarial work in Cedar Rapids retiring in 1954. She held leadership roles in several clubs including Eastern Star and the Business and Professional Women’s Clubs. Survived by four sisters. Services Saturday at Barta-Hesser chapel with burial at Oakwood Cemetery Ackley. viewing Friday after 2 p.m.
Clement C. Ted Little aged 40? years died Thursday. He was born February 4 1904 in Des Moines and married Etta Schmidt December 24 1927 in Cedar Rapids. Survived by his wife a sister Isabelle Tudeen of St Petersburg Fla. He belonged to Baha i Crescent lodge AF and AM Cedar chapter CES and Gethsemane White Shrine. Burial Cedar Memorial. Services Saturday at 1 30 p.m. at Turner's Davenport and Crescent lodge. Friends may call at the chapel. Master Masons meet Crescent at the Masonic hall Saturday at 1.
Services for James A. Mc Veigh will be conducted at 8 Saturday in Immaculate Conception church by Rt. Rev. Msgr. Maurice S. Sheehy. Burial will be at Mt. Calvary. Msgr. Sheehy will recite the Rosary at 7 30 p.m. Friday at Monahan Stewart funeral home, where friends may call after 1 p.m. Friday.
Flora Ilten aged 76 died Thursday in a Cedar Rapids nursing home after a long illness. Born in Luzerne she was affiliated with Trinity Lutheran church. Friends may call at Rohn Funeral Home Friday evening with funeral arrangements to be announced later.
The Rt Rev Msgr D J Lenihan will conduct services at St Patrick's Church at 9 Friday for Elizabeth Roeder with burial at Mt Calvary. Msgr Lenihan will recite the rosary at 7:30 p m Thursday at Teahen chapel where friends may call.

Officials said state health approval exists for a three year operation and noted no nuisance concerns until civil action proves otherwise. Voters backed more than 60 percent of three general obligation bond issues in a July 14 special election. Target sale date is early October, funded by property taxes. Sewer issue redemption funds are in the 1958 budget, with park and pool bonds in the 1959 budget. Erwin L. Clinton aged 49 of 1025 First St SE was sentenced to three years in the state penitentiary for a third offense drunken driving after pleading guilty. Clinton was arrested Tuesday night at Twelfth Avenue and Second Street SE. Judge Charles Penningroth refused parole citing an unsatisfactory result on his second offense parole. Clinton had prior convictions in 1950 in Buchanan County and 1953 in Linn County.
Linn county welfare costs largely match state averages in August per the State Board of Social Welfare. Average payments: old age assistance 68.51 for 1,093 cases. aid to the blind 83.46 for 87 cases. aid to dependent children 33.58 for 1,278 recipients.
