Fort Madison inmates riot spurs fear among residents
Residents near the Fort Madison prison described intense fear and confusion as inmates rioted. Relatives waited for word on guards and hostages, while some blamed state officials for conditions they say provoked the uprising. One hostage, Richard Barlow, was released around 8:30 p.m. and brought relief to his sister.
