ISU study links discrimination to low mood in black children
Iowa State University researchers report that black children as young as ten in small and mid sized cities face higher risk of low mood and emotional problems if they experience discrimination or even simply witness it. The study notes community discrimination predicts mood issues beyond personal experiences and that strong community pride can buffer effects. The five year project began in 1997 with an eight million dollar federal grant and follows 870 families in 41 cities in Iowa and Georgia.
