A Cornell College student arrives for fall classes to find a stolen U-Haul trailer from the Roosevelt Hotel parking ramp. The trailer owned by Edward E Ezell carried about $4000 in clothing suitcases bedding and personal items and was valued at $500.
A Cedar Rapids woman, Maria Spanos 58, sustained first and second degree burns and smoke inhalation in a basement kitchen fire. She was rescued by a neighbor who aided her to safety as firefighters worked to vent smoke and extinguish flames.
Robert R. Kinkead 42 of 1516 Center St NE was charged with assaulting his brother James Kinkead a Cedar Rapids police officer during a family dispute. Police report says Kinkead threatened to kill and struck his brother requiring two officers to restrain him. he posted a cash bond for release.
Four candidates debated McKinley Junior High's fate at a Citizens for Community Improvement forum. Kral and Hanson pledged to keep McKinley open, with Hanson caveating if enrollment and finances force a change. Moore and Rogers offered open mindedness and focus on funding the district's educational mission. The event highlighted budget gaps and a Sept 13 school levy renewal.
Fairfax officials plan to renew negotiations with farmer James McCormick after he refused a 2300 foot easement for an 864000 dollar sewer project. They face two paths: scrap the project with federal and state grant loss or attempt eminent domain if negotiations fail. The DEQ states the current Fairfax system must be replaced, risking fines if steps aren’t taken.
